Platinum Izumo Tamenuri Biwatame Fountain Pen

Izumo Biwatame the newest version within the Izumo family is a large pen made of ebonite with an urushi lacquer coating. 

This Biwatame model features a tan undercoating which will expose and become more beautiful as time goes on

Izumo is a city in north-western Japan. Izumo means "towards the clouds in heaven" and denotes new beginnings and new ideas that hold out the promise of innovation and prosperity. Platinum's Izumo is a new brand name that holds out the promise of new and beautiful ideas. 

The Izumo Tame-nuri is an Urushi lacquering technique. Several transparent layers of lacquer are applied to the pen in different stages by traditional experienced craftsman. The drying period between the layers, burnishing and polishing can take several months resulting in a shimmering dark layer of lacquer through which emerges a yellow substrate. Over time, the dark lacquer layer will lighten due to exposure to daylight and the yellow substrate will become even more pronounced. This ever-changing pen seems to become even more beautiful as time goes on
