Pilot Limited Edition 95th Anniversary Maki-e Ryu (Dragon) Fountain Pen

16 September 2013 – In celebration of its 95th Anniversary, Pilot Corporation has unveiled its limited-edition Nobori Ryu and Ryu fountain pens, the finest collection that draw on the traditional delicate beauty of Maki-e craftsmanship.

Intricately handcrafted on Pilot’s 95th Anniversary commemorative fountain pens are the majestic Nobori Ryu (“Rising Dragon”) and Ryu (“Dragon”). An iconic motif in Japanese art, architecture, literature and even popular culture, the Japanese dragon is regarded as one of the ‘Celestial Guardians of the Universe’. For centuries, the faithful in China and Japan worshipped the dragon, which is believed to symbolise the power of the Emperor as it controls the rain to maintain and support the country.

On the Yukari Vest Type Ryu, the mystical creature is illuminated in gold and silver glow against a rich black base through a combination Taka (Raised) Maki-e and Togidashi (Burnished) Maki-e techniques. Design of the Ryu fountain pen is further enhanced by striking patterns applied using the traditional Seirei-Nuri Maki-e technique. The majestic Ryu creates a truly enthralling masterpiece of beauty and elegance.
