 The Peony has a long history in Japanese ornamental culture and is esteemed for its distinctive and large delicate flowers. The elegant Peony is not only a symbol of ‘beauty’, ‘wealth’ and ‘prosperity’, but is also a representation of the transitory existence of nature. The realistic depiction on the pen illustrates the gradual change in the shape of the Peony as it transforms from a tiny bud to a blossom in full glory, beautifully revealing the extraordinary wonder of the natural world.

 This addition to the Chinkin Collection has been created using the Tenbori (dot carving) technique which involves the use of chiseled dots to carve the images, making the creation of each pen a painstaking process that has no room for error and requires tremendous skill and effort. The Chinkin technique encompasses the process of carving patterns into the lacquer surface using a range of chisels with various blade profiles, instead of coating and layering like the Maki-e technique. Gold leaf or powder is then inlayed in to the carved design. Thereafter, a thin layer of Urushi is then applied to protect the finished design.

All Namiki Chinkin and Maki-e pens are individually hand-crafted by master Japanese artists, combining artistry with the most advanced technical features. The products feature 18K gold or lacquer finishes, in various styles such as the intricate bold Emperor collection.
