There is often a symbolism attached to the subjects which explains the appearance of the same designs again and again in Japanese works of art. In Oriental design, natural forms are pared down to express their essence or spirit, "Urajiro" is an evergreen fern found in Asia. It has large distinctive leaves, split in two like outstretched wings. On the back of these "wings" are hundreds of spores which give the plant its name. Urajiro is considered to bring good fortune, its leaves used as New Year's decorations. The Maki-e artist has suggested the delicacy of the fern with consummate skill, while the lacquering technique mirrors the ferns quality of endurance. Only 200 Urajiro pens exist.  Only the finest nib could qualify for an Alfred Dunhill Namiki fountain pen. Hand ground in 18K gold, this nib is tipped in iridium mined from the Northern Japanese Island of Hokkaido. With its special hardening and protecting qualities, iridium ensures a nib of exceptional flexibility and durability.
