4 kinds of Maki-e design - Kabuki, Crane & Pine, Courtesan Fuji & Waves
It's the oldest and most famous art born in the Kyoto prefecture in the early Kamakura period in Japan and was most favored by the Royal courtyard of Japan and the Emperors. It was originally for making the special pottery and decorations with the stationery to emphasis the kingdoms wealth and power.
In this technique the Urushi Maki-e is painted many times on the whole pen and drying up takes lot of time around 6-8 months for the urushi to blend with the Pens whole body.
Later, the Gold is melted in high temperature in order to make it liquid and the sheet is made. This sheet has to be very precise and meticulously made in very thin shape around 0.005mm which is the most time consuming and hard work for the artists. after the each sheet is been layered on the pen in different patterns with a magnifying glass to make it precise.. No machines or other things are used to make this kind of makie in order to preserve its original beauty.
A small mistake can ruin the whole design therefore an immense concentration and makie urushi spirits learned artists can only do this art.
The great preservation of this art is on demand by the Japan government as the artists are depleting and this art may soon vanish from Japan.
