Sailor 1911 Classic Maki-e Akafuji ni Tsuru Fountain Pen

Sailor 1911 Classic Maki-e Akafuji ni Tsuru Fountain Pen

Sailor has introduced several new Maki-e creations on the 1911 Classic fountain pen, and Akafuji ni Tsuru is the latest to the collection.

By the artisan Kosen Oshita, this masterpiece showcases the Hira Maki-e technique to depict Mount Fuji and cranes. Unlike most interpretations, Oshita-san chose to portray a red Mount Fuji, offering a bold and striking vision of Japan’s iconic peak.

At the foot of the crimson mountain stands a pine tree, evergreen throughout the seasons. In Japanese culture, the pine symbolizes youth and longevity, and is a beloved feature in gardens and bonsai art alike.

On the pen cap, Oshita-san painted a pair of cranes (Tsuru) soaring gracefully across the sky. In Japan, the Tsuru is revered as one of the most majestic and auspicious birds, pure white with a vivid red crown. For this pen, the artisan rendered the red-crowned cranes in gold, emphasizing their nobility and significance.
