Nakaya Fountain Pen was founded in 1999 by Mr. Toshiya Nakata (Director and President, Platinum Pen Co. Ltd.) as a shop specializing in custom-made urushi lacquer fountain pens. With the passion to pass on the art of making fountain pens, our company started business together with veteran craftsmen who had worked at Platinum Pen for more than 40 years.
The trade name “Nakaya” comes from “Nakaya Manufacturing Company,” a company founded in 1924 as the predecessor to Platinum Pen.

Nakaya Fountain Pen has been crafting fountain pens using various materials since its founding. One of the materials that has been particularly well-received is urushi lacquer.

The urushi lacquer coating is smooth and gentle in touch. And the more you use it, the more you realize how excellent it is as a practical product. The soothing shades of lacquer that blend in with everyday life and the gorgeous maki-e are the hallmarks of lacquer.

Tasogare-nuri
The silver-colored urusih lacquer of the base is gradated and covered with transparence lacquer as the top lacquer to create a shiny finish that bleeds throughout the entire piece.

Zo-gan Inlay
Zo” means to shape, and “gan” means to inlay. The piece is inlaid with an ultra-thin sheet of cut gold and finish with urushi lacquer.
