He began his career as a
concert pianist, but during the course of his illustrious career, the
Hungarian musician Georg Solti would come to be regarded as the greatest
conductor in the world, 2nd only to Herbert von Karajan. In 1938 he
debuted as a conductor with Le Nozze di Figaro in Budapest. Over the
decades Solti went on to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra,
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, L'Orchestre de Paris, and the London
Philharmonic Orchestra. By the time of his death in 1997, Solti had a host
of honorary doctorates, a knighthood (1972), 33 Grammies and a Grammy
Lifetime Achievement Award (1996), and the notice of the world.
