Faber-Castell's legacy of transforming the living material of wood into the finest writing instruments reaches a new pinnacle of beauty in the form of petrified Brazilian deciduous wood. The dark colouring and hardness of this wood when refined presents a gemstone finish of the highest quality. Individual hues vary from light brown through anthracite to deep black, all with a characteristic sparkle. A platinum-plated frame encases eight "stones" of the precious material and the end of the cap features the material faceted as a diamond and polished to a mirror finish. Petrified wood comes about in a crystallization process lasting up to 360 million years. Wood covered by water or ash undergoes a unique metamorphosis when minerals, metals, lime, or phosphorus penetrate the wood through layers of sediment. The materials gradually replace the wood but leave some of the organic structure intact. In a silica-rich environment, the petrified wood begins to develop into the preliminary stages of semi-precious chalcedony or agate.
