An Italian aeronautical
engineer and Arctic explorer, Umberto Nobile designed and piloted the
airship Norge, the first aircraft to reach the North Pole as well as cross
the polar ice cap between Europe and America in 1926. He is perhaps more
well known for commandeering the Italia in 1928 on another polar expedition.
Nobile and 15 others arrived at the Pole but were unable to land for unknown
reasons and instead crashed into an ice block on the Arctic Glacial Ocean.
The cockpit was lost, but the crew managed to salvage food, a radio
transmitter, and a camping tent which they dyed with aniline, all of which
would aid the crew as they survived 48 days on the ice before finally being
rescued. The eye dropper filler safety fountain pen is a 1920s redesign. The
fountain pen and rollerball are both comprised of a striped ebonite barrel
and vermeil cap decorated with a geometrical guilloche. Fine decorations
infuse the golden fittings. An 18k gold nib and a commemorative bottle of
ink completes the fountain pen presentation. Each limited edition of 1,919
fountain pens and 999 rollerballs is presented in a miniature red tent.
