Born on September 29, 1547 in Alcala de Henares, Spain, Miguel de Cervantes enlisted in the Spanish militia at the age of 23 and in 1571 fought against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto, where he lost the use of his left hand. He spent four more years at sea, then another five as a slave after being captured by Barbary pirates. Ransomed by his family, he returned to Madrid but his disability hampered him; in debtor's prison he began to write Don Quixote, a work viewed by many as the prototype of the modern novel and one which continues to impress readers 400 years after its initial publication. Originally conceived as a satire on popular stories of chivalry, it chronicles the famous picaresque adventures of the knight errant Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza as they travel through a living panorama of 16th century Spain.

The scene in Don Quixote in which the Don goes to battle with the windmills inspired the design of Montblanc's tributary pen; the shape of ancient windmill sails is reflected in the design, especially the golden clip. Cervantes' signature adorns the body in golden letters which glitter in contrast to the brown marbled paint of the barrel, which is then subdivided by gilded rings. The precious 18k gold nib is engraved with an outline of a windmill.
