Hercules - the most important hero in Greek
mythology
Hercules, or Roman
"Hercules", really is the most famous and complex figure of
classical Greek mythology. He was the first hero to be worshipped not only
in the Mediterranean countries, but far beyond.
His impressive "twelve labors" symbloize the epic sojourn of the
prehistoric hero. Hercules was considered the helper of ,man in times when
hunting and breeding were man's most vital duties. Related to the sun, the
sign of strength, he tamed wild beasts and the seemingly uncontrollable
natural forces. Hercules is the hero of virtuous strength and special
genius. He is attributed with cultural development and he established
social as well as moral order. Through all the centuries when agriculture
was man's most important economic activity, Hercules was considered the
patron of crops and the deity of water, the prerequisite of all forms of
life. In historic times, he also became the primogenitor of royal houses,
the founder of cities and the first Olympic Games. It was Hercules who
chose and designated the sacred precinct of Olympia and establised the
Games as a celebration in memory of his father. In all their sport
stadiums, called "gymnasium". The Greek built statues to honor
him, besides Hermes and Apoll, as their patron deity and master of
wrestling. In all Greek mythology there is no hero, not even a deity, who
is the subject of so many traditions.
According to the most widley known myth in ancient Greece, Hercules was
born an grew up in Thebes. He spent his more mature years, which were also
the more arduous ones, in Argos. His birth was the fruit of the deceitful
union of Zeus with Alcmene. When Hera realized she was tricked into
breastfeeding Hercules, she quickly pulled the child away from her bosom.
Her milk was split and splattered the heavens, forming the Milky Way.
Destined by his father to achieve great things, Hercules even as an infant
already demonstrated his super human powers when he strangled with his
bare hands the two terrible snakes Hera had sent to his cradle.
Fabulous teachers taught him
science and the fine arts. He cam of age hunting and performing heroic
tasks on Mount Cithareon. He left Thebes when the Delphi oracle commanded
him for twelve years into the services of Eurystheus, King of Tiryns, who
each year imposed on Hercules a virtually impossible labor. During that
time, Hercules accomplished the "twelve labors", which were and
still are the most famous of his adventures.
His first labor was to catch
and kill the Nemean Lion. Ever since, Hercules wore the skin of the Nemean
Lion for the coat. It made him forever invulnerable. This invulnerability
was vital and fateful for the life of the greatest classical hero. The day
Hercules dies, Zeus turned him into constellation. To make his fame
