A Masterwork of Creation
Our solar system. A
spectacle of evolutionary power which has lasted for millions of years and
is the home of our existence. This unique creation in the middle of the
infinity of the universe now comes into the world as a new creation – in
the form of the limited edition “Caelum” (in English, “the
heavens”).
Derived from the average 58 million kilometre distance at which Mercury,
the first planet of our solar system, orbits the sun, the limited edition
“Caelum” is limited worldwide to 580 writing instruments.
This limitation and the union of the finest components and materials,
masterfully combined using traditional artisan skills, make the limited
edition “Caelum” a new masterpiece from Pelikan.
Galileo Galilei (1564 -
1642) is probably the greatest astronomer in history. During the 16th and
17th century he made a name for himself also as a physicist, mathematician
and philosopher far beyond the borders of Italy. Galilei made significant
discoveries in astronomy.
He was the first to use the, at that time just recently invented,
telescope for observing the stars and planets. With this “star
telescope” he researched sunspots, the moon seas named Maria, the
largest four Jupiter moons, the phases of Venus and many other phenomena.
He also recognised that the Milky Way consists of stars. Discoveries,
which initiated radical changes in the field of sciences – and which
constitute part of the foundations of the world as we know it today.
With the visually and artistically unique offering of the planets of our
solar system as a timeless and worldwide strictly limited writing
instrument, following its “Myth of the Moon Goddess” and
“Hercules” editions, Pelikan once more dedicates this new limited
edition “Caelum” to the fascinating subject of astronomy. A science
which has always beguiled mankind and which has lost none of its
fascination and power today.
The limited edition
“Caelum” is a spectacular creation full of astonishingly staged
details of our solar system.
The masterfully hand engraved 18 carat gold nib, decorated throughout with
rhodium, is just the tip of this impressive masterpiece. The top of the
cap symbolises the sun shining over everything, its brilliant golden rays
engraved into the cap of the “Caelum” towards which the nine planets
of the solar system stream.
At the foot of the cap, likewise in the form of the finest engraving,
begins the fascinating representation of all nine planets, from Mercury to
Pluto, which is continued passionately on the barrel. On the back, along
the entire length of the cap and barrel is a gilded band, with the names
of the sun and all the planets, crossed by the finely symbolised planetary
orbits.
Barrel, cap and grip are framed in fine sterling silver and painted cosmos
blue such that many distant stars and planets from other galaxies can be
seen as tiny points of light.
