NAMIKI
2002 LIMITED EDITION GOOSE
& PINK FLOWER
The
geese of today in Japan are said to have originated from man's efforts to
domesticate the wild Anser Goose. The practice came into Japan from China,
whereby these geese were cultivated as objects of beauty to be admired.
Pink
flowers have grown from ancient times in the fields and hills of Japan.
Seisho Nagon praised these flowers in classical literature of Japan
including the "Pillow Book". She commented that, "The pink
flower is the queen of the flowering plants. The best of all are those that
bloom in China, Jut the pinks we see in Japan are also very pleasing."
The oldest collection of odes and poems in Japan is the Manyoshu which is a
collection of a Myriad Leaves, compiled about 1,200 years ago. It contains
several odes containing the pink flower including “When I see pink flowers
in the fields, I know that the autumn I so yearn for is close at hand."
This flower is one of the "seven plants and flowers of autumn"
that symbolize his season in Japan, and it has been loved since ancient
times by the Japanese people.
Overview
The
Namiki Goose & Pink Flower is a vest type fountain pen made with an
Urushi lacquer coat. It features a motif of geese and pink flowers,
displayed using a raised gold lacquer technique and it is a very unique
combination.
It is a
limited edition fountain pen and is restricted to a total of 83 pens
worldwide. The barrel is signed by the hand of a Maki-e artist. The serial
number of each fountain pen is also indicated on the end plug.
Close-up
The
goose is created by rubbing away the top layer of lacquer to reveal the
colours beneath using technique called Togidashi (burnished) Maki-e. The
raised lacquer technique is called Taka (raised) Maki-e, and for the breast
a needle engraving method is used in which numerous delicate lines are drawn
with a needle to express the soft fluffiness of down. The flower pinks are
drawn using the raised lacquer technique and urushi lacquers coloured with
pigments. A precision 18-karat gold nib and superior ink delivery system
ensure an exceptionally smooth writing experience.
