CULTURE
FOR ALL - CARNEGIE'S MAGNIFICENT LEGACY
Andrew
Carnegie is one of the finest examples of the great American success story.
The son of a poor Scottish immigrant, he became a millionaire steel magnate
through a combination of luck, skill and hard work. Despite his fabulous
wealth, his whole life was influenced by the privations of a childhood spent
in poverty "Man does not live by bread alone" became one of Andrew
Carnegie's central tenets. So it is hardly surprising that he later gave
almost his entire fortune - a staggering 350 million dollars - to a series
of art and cultural foundations, and towards supporting public projects
worldwide like the upkeep of public libraries or the construction of large
concert halls Carnegie Hall in New York is the most famous of these projects
. Further proof of Carnegie's progressive thinking is found in his support
for artists pursuing an often controversial new style - art nouveau.

The

exquisite detail of this unique writing instrument is the rhodinised 18
